Em termos simples, \u00e9 um c\u00e1lculo da sa\u00fade da vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o, baseado na forma como diferentes ondas de luz s\u00e3o reflectidas.<\/strong>&nbsp; O pigmento clorofila nas plantas reflecte ondas verdes e absorve ondas vermelhas, e as estruturas celulares nas plantas reflectem as ondas quase infravermelhas (NIR). Quando ocorre a fotoss\u00edntese, a planta cresce e cont\u00e9m mais estruturas celulares. O per\u00edodo de flora\u00e7\u00e3o \u00f3ptimo pode ser visto claramente atrav\u00e9s do mergulho no \u00edndice (nota que os sat\u00e9lites 'v\u00eaem' amarelo quando isto acontece). Como as colheitas dentro do mesmo campo variam, n\u00e3o haver\u00e1 um valor de 1 para o campo inteiro.
